1996 DEMO TAPE

This is a track by myself and Beany put together in 1996. It has a break in it that was lifted from the film Point Break (the part when Keanu Reeeves is drowning) which is made up of strings. It also 'borrows' a few ideas from some of my favourite records at the time. The phasing sound which is layered over the drums was used in Johnny Fiasco's 'Conduction' on Cajual Records (1995), amongst others and is similar to the sound of two copies of the same record being played simultaneously. There is also a bit double beating at points. This record aint gonna make the top 10 but it was fun doing it. You can download the track HERE.

BARBARISM BEGINS AT HOME (ALLEZ ALLEZ EDIT)

Sam Willis - one half of ALLEZ ALLEZ DJ / production duo (along with Steve Nolan) kindly let me post his unreleased edit of the classic Smiths track -BARBARISM BEGINS AT HOME (ALLEZ ALLEZ EDIT) up here. I really like this take on the original track which cuts back on most of Morrissey's vocal and builds more of a track, but retains the original 'smiths' sound.
You can find out more about Allez Allez and download some superb free music and information from their ALLEZ ALLEZ MYSPACE page.

They also have their own ALLEZ ALLEZ blog, which at the moment includes free mixes by Lindstrom, Low Motion Disco, Ben Watt, Hot Chip and JD Twitch (of Optimo fame), amongst many others. Every week, dj mixes by Allez Allez and other guest djs will be available to download from the homepage or automatically as a podcast. Really worth having a look at these links.

YIPYAP 2nd BIRTHDAY FLYER

YipYaps 2nd Birthday party included DJ Pierre as a guest. DJ Pierre is widely credited with producing the first acid house record - the 1987 E.P. "Acid Tracks",by Phuture on Trax Records. DJ Pierre went on to record many of the early Acid House tracks on Trax Records such as String Free, Got The Bug, Box Energy, Fantasy Girl, We Are Phuture and Slam. In 1990, DJ Pierre moved away from Chicago, where the House Music scene was slowing down and joined Strictly Rhythm records, where he was also briefly the A&R manager and released tracks such as Generate Power by Photon Inc and Follow Me by Aly Us. There are a few of his tracks sprinkled through the mixes on this blog - including the Yo Yo Honey Wildpitch remix in the JUNE 1994 mix below.

MUZIK MAGAZINE CHART

December 1994. Six out of the ten listed are contained somewhere within the mixtapes on this page. I would say all ten tracks have stood the test of time really well and could still cut it in a club today. Particularly the Noah's Ark track - 'The Quick', by Ralph Falcon, who is one half of Murk.

The Muzique Tropique E.P. is by Kevin McKay who went on to form the Glasgow Underground label as well as releasing several records on the Junior Boys Own sub label 'Jus Trax', including the superb 'Stella Sunday' from The Festival E.P., which became a bit of an anthem at YipYap. Deep house from Scotland.

HARD TIMES IN SCOTLAND

Hard Times in Scotland flyer. Sunday night at the Tunnel in Glasgow, 5th February 1995. Gareth and myself were djing with Miles and Elliot from Manchester. It was all going well...until one of the Glaswegian crowd decided to rip off Barbara Tuckers wig during her live performance which led to her and her team of dancers storming off. Other than that it was a good night... Miles and Elliot are two of the best dj's I have played with or heard and are also responsible, along with Si Brad for one of the best house records I've ever heard, Paper Music Issue #1 - Downtime on Paper Recordings 1995. Downtime was the second release on Paper Recordings, the first being "The Book" by Salt City Orchestra (another pseudonym for Miles, Elliot and Si) which really captured the mood at the time - a new wave in British house music.
